Marathon Leadership: 26.2 Essential Lessons for Modern Leaders
I haven’t published many stories on Medium in 2024. But that doesn’t mean I haven’t been doing a ton of writing…and editing…and proofing…and marketing.
All that hard work paid off this week when my book Marathon Leadership: 26.2 Essential Lessons for Modern Leaders was published. It’s the culmination of decades of work that all began during a miserable training run. From the Introduction:
One morning several years ago, I was struggling on a long training run. I was tired. It was cold and rainy. And I had a lot of other things I could have been doing back in my warm, dry office.
But I was in the midst of an intense training cycle for a marathon, where I hoped to set a PR (Personal Record). That meant that skipping or abbreviating my long run that cold rainy day wasn’t an option.
Hoping to distract myself, I started thinking about how my hobby had a lot in common with my profession (leadership training and coaching). It worked. Almost instantly, my feet felt lighter and the chilling rain more bearable as I contemplated this idea for the rest of my fifteen miles.
When I got home, I threw on dry clothes, headed to my office, and compiled a list of the leadership lessons I’d learned by training for and completing marathons. This initial list…
